What is Pneumonia?

Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs caused by an upper respiratory infection or cold. Liquid fills the lungs and they become inflamed, which makes it harder to breathe. There are several different types of pneumonia based on the cause of the infection (bacteria, virus, or fungus). Not every type of pneumonia will be treated in the same way, so it is important to find out which type you are suffering from.

What are the Symptoms of Pneumonia?

Pneumonia has symptoms similar to many other respiratory illnesses. Here are a few of the obvious symptoms you may experience:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Chills
  • Chest Pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Thick and discolored mucus

Pneumonia Treatment Options

If you are having respiratory troubles and think you may have pneumonia, you should visit a doctor. They may do a chest x-ray on site within a few minutes (and/or do a blood test) to help diagnose your specific case and discover how severe it is. If you are diagnosed with bacterial pneumonia, then you will be prescribed antibiotics, but any pneumonia is treated with rest and lots of liquids. Other medications may be suggested to treat the symptoms such as coughing and fever.
